Not much, and that's excellent news. Our bio-circular edition uses a mass balance approach certified by ISCC. This guarantees that materials procured for manufacturing are bio-based. The exact amount of bio-based materials varies between cans.
With this new release, Aspen takes a small but vital step toward a bio-circular economy. Like before, each can is filled with 100% premium alkylate to ensure the top performance you expect from our products.

Here’s how our mass balance approach works
In a complex value chain like Aspen’s, a mass balance approach offers an easier yet certified path toward a bio-circular economy. It works like HVO or green electricity by allocating green atoms that we can distribute.
Our process begins by mixing 80% bio-based and 20% fossil materials. Then, using our unique method, the materials are refined and finalized into premium Aspen alkylate fuel with the same performance as our other products. The finished products are then transported to us, stored, and finally filled into containers.
The flow of materials in this chain typically blends bio-based and fossil materials, as physical segregation is practically and economically infeasible. The ISCC certification ensures that each step is verified by an independent auditor through segregated bookkeeping. This guarantees that the stated amounts of bio-based and fossil materials remain unchanged throughout the process. With that we can say that our new product contains 80% bio-based materials without measuring each can, as the total amount sums to that figure.
Today, our bio-based materials consist of bio-based waste to enable the step toward a bio-circular economy.
Please note: The first version of our product labels state that the content is recycled. This is incorrect; the material we use is biobased. This has been corrected for all upcoming label prints. Meanwhile, you might encounter cans looking slightly different from our images. However, you can rest assured either version contains the same biobased fuel
